Halloumi in Running For Best UK Restaurant

Halloumi Announced on Shortlist For Best Restaurant at The UK Restaurant and Design Awards

We are beyond excited to share that Halloumi, has been shortlisted for the coveted title of best restaurant in the UK’s biggest industry awards.

Specialising in Modern Greek cuisine we are the only Scottish finalist in the standalone UK restaurant category against seven finalists including Uli in Notting Hill and Tom’s Kitchens led by founded by award-winning chef Tom Aikens in Birmingham.

Now in its ninth year, the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards have a huge global following and are recognised as the foremost competition dedicated to the design of food and beverage spaces. Entries from over 70 countries cover every imaginable hospitality space; from ships to airports, museums to burger vans, from revered Michelin-starred establishments to the fleeting dynamism of pop-ups.

Recognising inspirational and creative spaces, Zaza Hadid – the international architect who reimagined the spectacular wave and structure of the Riverside Museum, was a previous judge. Restaurateur Michael Caine and Christopher Cowdray of the Dorchester Collection feature on this year’s judging panel who will scrutinise the creative concept and delivery of each restaurant design.

The winners of the 2017 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards will be announced during a ceremony at London’s King’s Cross on the 5th October. Three Restaurant & Bar designers (SHH, Design Command and Haptic Architects) will each create a cutting edge space inspired from ‘Sound’, with the spaces theatrically revealed on the night of the Awards.

Speaking of the shortlist announcement, Kevin Campbell co-founder of The Rotunda Group said:

“We set out with the vision to create a space that our family would be proud to eat in outside of Greece and to be recognised by leading awards is both humbling and really rewarding. To be the only Glasgow restaurant in the category is an achievement and we can’t wait for the awards later this year.”

Toni Carbajosa, co-founder of The Rotunda Group continues:

“Halloumi is a slice of sunshine on Hope Street. We opened in August and the reception from Glasgow has been fantastic; welcoming our healthy sun-drenched dishes and embracing our Mediterranean heritage. We really feel that you could be in Athens when you walk through our doors.”

Halloumi is an independent restaurant owned and operated by The Rotunda Group in the heart of Glasgow. Co-owned and operated by Kevin Campbell and Toni Carbajosa.

Glasgow’s Best International Restaurant

It’s the April annual that every restaurant in Glasgow or Edinburgh wants to be in. You know, that coveted food bible that is The List Magazine’s Eating and Drinking Guide 24th edition for 2017/2018. And your favourite Greek restaurant only went and got hitlisted as one of the best international (Greek) restaurants in Glasgow!

To say that we’re over the moon is an understatement. Here’s what they said about Halloumi in this year’s guide:

From The List Magazine Halloumi

edg17-cover-LST239746

“Halloumi evokes the primary aesthetic associations of the Mediterranean with that of the current trend in restaurant design – the cyan frontage is the perfect precursor to an interior of marbled, mosaic flooring, exposed white brickwork and low hanging lights that hover just above thick wooden tables.

Launched last summer, the food is characterised by its commitment to the Greek-Cypriot mezze style of eating, meaning dishes are shared and arrive at staggered points throughout the meal. The stress is clearly on bold flavours derived from few ingredients. A large octopus tentacle is a case in point – its outside sweetly charred to just the right side of cooked, served with a simple garnish of smoked paprika and hummus. There’s a quartet of meats available from the grill, with the lamb souvlaki consisting of well-seasoned, speared rump and is a steal at £6.75. Vegetarians are well catered for with the pick spanakopita – a comforting and moreish dish of pastry, spinach and goats’ cheese.

A glance at Halloumi’s menu shows it to be, with a few exceptions, a traditional Greek-Cypriot restaurant, but in its style and energy it is both thoroughly contemporary and charming.”

Thanks to The List Magazine for our snazzy certificate and award, and to all of our Halloumi friends and customers for the continued support and love!
